The Bulgarian Opera Myth • The Three Bassos • The Three Sopranos
I chose three bassos and three sopranos who built their peaks in the last century: Boris Christoff, Nikolai Ghiaurov, Nikola Ghiuzelev and Raina Kabaivanska, Ghena Dimitrova, Anna Tomowa-Sintow. A hard but nec¬essary choice, because it is impossible to cover the huge army of Bulgarian opera singers who conquered the opera planet. I focused on those who are a synthesized expression of the Bulgarian input in the opera performance art of the second half of the 20th c. Their almost simultaneous advance disclosed the different dimensions of the Bulgarian talent. It spread out over all epochs and styles — from Mozart to contemporary music.
